Defending against Veterinary Board Complaints

Defending against Veterinary Board Complaints

The Situation: Over the summer, several of our veterinary clients received complaints against them from disgruntled clients.

Our solution: Attorney Anne Brown represented those veterinarians in hearings before the Minnesota Board of Veterinary Medicine, and all of those hearings ended with decisions that “no disciplinary action” was necessary.

The Conclusion: Anne’s takeaway, however, from the Board and the proactive advice she now extends to our other veterinary clients: “Pay special attention to the thoroughness of your patient notes and records.” It is not enough to say “all physical exam findings within normal range.” Rather, be sure to specify which systems you evaluated and all tests that you performed to reach that conclusion, even if implied. Write each note as if the audience for it is greater than just your own staff.
