4 Tips for Recovering from a Divorce

The divorce process can be time-consuming, stressful, and expensive. For these reasons, people are often eager to get through the legal aspect of a divorce so they can start focusing on the next chapter in their life.

This can be both daunting and exciting, depending on a host of factors like financial stability, parenting plans, and living arrangements. Below are some tips for making the recovery process a little easier.

  1. Live in the Midwest. According to a recent study, people who live in or around Minneapolis or parts of Wisconsin often find it easier to recover from divorce than people in other parts of the country. The study scored major U.S. cities on economic and relationship factors, and Minneapolis scored as the best place to recover from divorce; other Midwest cities were not far behind.
  2. Be patient and expect some challenges. After divorce, it can be difficult to adjust to supporting yourself, managing a household, and taking care of the kids. Don’t set yourself up for failure by expecting everything to be perfect and conflict-free. There will be challenges and possibly some setbacks. Being patient with yourself and your loved ones can give you the time and space you need to find a new normal.
  3. Avoid rash decisions with long-term repercussions. After a divorce, some people find it tempting to do things like make huge purchases, get a tattoo, or cut loved ones out of their lives. While that type of decision is entirely personal, it can be a good idea to avoid actions you have to live with indefinitely, or perhaps permanently. Things like debt and severed relationships can be very difficult to repair or undo in the future.
  4. Avoid isolating yourself. Divorce can make a person feel lonely. However, isolating oneself can further compromise the situation. Talk to a counselor, go out with co-workers, join community groups and prioritize time with your loved ones. These are valuable outlets that can help you rebuild your support system and find meaningful relationships.

The challenges of divorce don’t necessarily disappear after resolving divorce-related matters. Recovering from the process can be difficult, but following these tips can make life easier.
